Hosted by Accrington Stanley Community Trust at the Stanley Sports Hub, the tournament brought together participants from the Violence Reduction Network’s Champions programme, which supports young people through mentoring, designed to build confidence, resilience and aspirations.
Teams representing Preston North End Community and Education Trust, Blackburn Rovers, Burnley FC in the Community, Blackpool FC Community Trust, Morecambe FC Community Foundation, Wigan Athletic Community Trust and Accrington Stanley Community Trust took part in a series of closely contested matches throughout the day.
The event celebrated the commitment and achievements of young people involved in the Champions programme, with participants demonstrating teamwork, respect and sportsmanship both on and off the pitch.
The tournament was organised through the Commissioner’s Lancashire Violence Reduction Network (LVRN), which works with partners across the county to prevent serious violence through early intervention, education and positive opportunities for young people. The Champions programme provides mentoring and support to help young people build confidence, develop resilience and make positive choices for their future
Clive Grunshaw, Police and Crime Commissioner for Lancashire, said:
“The Champions programme is about giving young people positive opportunities, trusted support and the confidence to make good choices and reach their potential.
“Events like this bring young people together in a positive environment, helping them build friendships, develop new skills and celebrate what they have achieved through the programme. It is encouraging to see so much commitment, teamwork and sportsmanship on display throughout the tournament.
“Preventing violence and supporting young people to lead positive, fulfilling lives is an important part of our work to make Lancashire safer. I would like to thank everyone involved in organising the event and congratulate all of the teams who took part.”
The Champions programme forms part of Lancashire’s public health approach to violence reduction, working with young people across the county to provide positive activities, mentoring and support that help prevent them from becoming involved in crime and violence.
