The Police and Crime Commissioner (PCC) visited the officers and their dogs at their base in Hutton, where both handlers and their canine partners underwent initial training and refresher courses.
During the visit, he observed several dogs, including Murphy, an 18-month-old Belgian Malinois, and Bozzie, aged 3, showcasing their various specialities in ensuring public safety.
The dogs are trained for multiple roles and disciplines, such as general purpose tasks and specialised searches, including detecting explosives, drugs, money, blood, and bodies.
The unit comprises a mix of Belgian and German Shepherds, Malinois, and Dutch Herders for general purpose duties, while breeds like Labradors and Springer Spaniels are utilised for specialised search operations.
Clive Grunshaw, Lancashire’s Police and Crime Commissioner said:
“The Dogs Unit plays a vital role in tackling crime across Lancashire, supporting a range of policing teams from reassurance patrols and major event policing through to investigations and responding to incidents.
“The different roles that our talented dogs, their handlers, and trainers, cover shows the diverse ways that the team protect the public and help bring criminals to justice.
“I will continue to support the Constabulary with the resources needed, and hold the Chief Constable accountable for delivering an effective and efficient policing service that meets the needs and expectations of residents.”
