Commissioner backs Blackburn project mobilising faith leaders to tackle violence against women and girls

Lancashire’s Police and Crime Commissioner, Clive Grunshaw, is backing a pioneering initiative in Blackburn with Darwen that is empowering faith leaders to play a central role in preventing violence against women and girls (VAWG).

The Faith in Safety project, delivered by IMO Charity, is working with local faith institutions to challenge harmful attitudes and provide culturally sensitive guidance. Through training, workshops, and community events co-designed with lived experience in mind and supported by experts, the project equips faith leaders with the tools to promote zero tolerance of abuse and strengthen referral pathways to specialist services.

Funded through the Commissioner’s VAWG Community Fund, the project has received nearly £5,000 to deliver a seven-month programme. The initiative delivers a series of practical and impactful activities designed to strengthen anti-VAWG messaging within faith communities.

As part of the project, three capacity-building workshops for 15–20 faith leaders will be delivered, equipping them with the knowledge and confidence to challenge harmful attitudes and respond effectively to disclosures of abuse, with these sessions co-designed with survivors and experts.

To amplify the message further, the initiative will culminate in a “Faith Against Abuse” community event, bringing together residents, leaders, and partners to raise awareness and promote collective accountability.

Clive Grunshaw said: “Preventing violence against women and girls is a key priority in my Police and Crime Plan. By equipping all areas of our communities with the right knowledge and resources, we can challenge harmful behaviours at their root and create safer spaces for women and girls.

“This project is a fantastic example of how local organisations can work in partnership to deliver meaningful change. By engaging trusted voices within faith communities, we can break down barriers, tackle stigma, and ensure survivors feel supported and heard.

“I am proud that through the VAWG Community Fund we are backing initiatives like this, which not only raise awareness but also create sustainable networks and deliver results, preventing victims of crime and making Lancashire safer.”

Faz Sidat, Head of Programmes (Youth) at IMO Charity said:

“Our ‘Faith in Safety’ work has been a powerful learning journey for the team. It has opened our eyes to the depth of need within our communities, and the vital role faith spaces can play in creating safety, trust and zero tolerance toward violence against women and girls. With the support of specialist guidance, this project has strengthened our understanding, deepened our compassion, and inspired us to carry this important work forward.

“We extend our heartfelt thanks to the PCC for empowering IMO Charity to deliver such crucial work and for standing with us in the collective commitment to protect and uplift every woman and girl.”

The Commissioner’s VAWG fund has invested £177,000 across Lancashire to support 38 community-led interventions.
